HAPPY OURS WITH DOC ELLIS

While Most Las Vegas music fans can’t agree on much in terms of music genres, most can agree on one thing: Michael “Doc” Ellis is a Rock Star. From his stints in the Sin City Sinners as first a bass player, then guitarist, to his blistering performances with his projects Doc’s Angels and Brazen, and now as a guitarist in RATT, the “Doc of all things Rock” has wowed fans and friends a like in his 15 years in Las Vegas, but his career goes back even further.
Growing up in California, where he “claims the entire southern California border” as his hometown, Ellis began playing music at 8 years old.  Starting as a drummer, he gravitated towards guitar at 12 and began playing in a local Jazz ensemble before joining a number of local hard rock acts. “Those jazz guys taught me how NOT to play. If you played just a note too much they’d let you have it. They’d give you a look and you just knew. They taught me how to respect the song and not over play.”  Doc recorded and toured with a number of groups, and was a highly sought after session player.

Gary started his DJ career back in the days when half a dozen singles from Saturday Night Fever were guaranteed to fill the dance floor. Hospital radio beckoned in the early 1990s and he now finds himself on a Spanish station, surprised that it’s the English speaking population that listens, having always thought the most suitable audience would be those who hadn’t a clue what he was on about.

He fell in love with beat music in the 60s, and in 1997 he was approached by The Searchers to publish their official website which he does to this day.

The Gary Jackson Show is packed with special features – not for the audience’s benefit, but because at his age just staying awake for two hours is tough enough, and every little helps! COMEDY ON VINYL PODCAST

Comedy on Vinyl is a podcast created by writer/actor Jason Klamm in which he discusses influential and important comedy albums with the week’s guests.  Jason created Comedy on Vinyl to help people discover comedy the way he did – one thing at a time.  In an all-digital world, we’re inundated with “content” from people who think they’re funny and people who want us to think those same people are funny. We take for granted being able to visit any given website to watch our favorite funny stuff.

Once upon a time, however, if you wanted some comedy all your own, you had to go to a record store, buy a record, open it, put it on the turntable and sit down with it, staring at the sleeve – usually with giant headphones on – and escape into laughter. Comedy on Vinyl’s goal is not to look so far into the past that we miss the amazing advantages technology has given us.  Rather, it’s about appreciating a long-forgotten pastime of setting aside time for comedy and appreciating it. Vinyl just forces you to do that.

Comedy on Vinyl is hosted by Jason Klamm and produced by Mike Worden.  The podcast is frequented by the likes of Jeremy Guskin, Mike Preister, Dan Gomiller and Ari Jarvis.

DAVE THE RAVE

Dave the Rave has spent countless hours searching for these hit sounding 45’s that never entered into the Top 40 but had the sound potential to have done so. The show is very diverse in the music that it features. You will hear soul, surf, garage, British Invasion, girl groups, doowop, rockabilly, teenagers, and instrumentals.

Relics and Rarities loves to feature local hits, record store rarities, lost B-sides and original versions of Top 40 hits. Many of the 45’s in his collection is the kind of music that you would be paying thousand’s of dollars for in an old record store if you could even find the record.

Dave the Rave has one of the largest music collections of anybody we know. He has approximately 100,000+ 45 RPM records that grows weekly, 25,000 albums, and 25,000 CDs that he accesses to bring you an exciting Relics and Rarities show. You may occasionally hear a pop, or some vinyl crackle on Dave the Rave’s show as he digs deep into his record library to bring you oldies many of which will be new even to the listener that thinks he has heard em all and knows everything!

The show had been on XM Satellite Radio where it had a large coast to coast fanbase. It currently airs in several markets through syndication and is always seeking new stations that seek a unique show featuring the familiar safe songs along with those lost buried rarities that previously were just collecting dust in old record stores across America. Dave the Rave always suggests having pen and paper at your disposal so that you can start writing down songs that you will love and perhaps never hear again!

LIVE FROM THE 60’S THE REAL DON STEEL

Born in Hollywood, California, Steele graduated from Hollywood High School, served in the United States Air Force and then studied at a local radio school, the Don Martin School of Broadcasting, where he also taught for a short time. Shortly thereafter, Steele began his radio career working outside of L.A. at a small station, KBUC in Corona, CA then moving on to KEPR Kennewick, KIMA Yakima and KXLY Spokane, all in Washington; KOIL Omaha, Nebraska; KISN Portland, Oregon, and KEWB San Francisco before returning to Los Angeles to help kick off what would become one of the most influential radio stations in the country, 93/KHJ, Boss Radio, in April 1965.

Steele became nationally-known as a DJ on radio station KHJ in Los Angeles, where he helped to promote the “ultrahip” top-40 Boss Radio format which began at 3pm on April 27, 1965. He also appeared on TV as host Boss Cityand The Real Don Steele TV Show, a show which ran from 1965 to 1975 on KHJ-TV channel 9 in Los Angeles. When the popularity of AM radio gave way to FM stereo in the 1970s, Steele continued to remain a popular personality at the station. Following the years at 93/KHJ, The Real Don Steele continued to be heard on Los Angeles radio stations, including KIQQ (K-100), KRLA, KCBS-FM and KRTH-FM (K-Earth 101), until his death in August 1997.

In the book Los Angeles Radio People, Steele recalled the beginnings of Boss Radio in 1965: “We were standing literally at ground zero, then (the radio format) became a huge giant. It was like a mushroom cloud that went up — heavy on the mushroom.”

Steele also gained additional notoriety due to an ill-fated promotion which KHJ undertook on behalf of his show during the summer of 1970. The promotion was dubbed a “Super Summer Spectacular” and involved Steele driving around the Los Angeles-area in a flashy red car. Throughout the day, KHJ would broadcast clues about Steele’s location, and listeners who successfully tracked him down would receive cash prizes of about $25. On July 16, 1970, two teenagers attempting to track Steele by car at speeds of roughly 80 miles per hour forced another car into a highway center divider, causing the death of Ronald Weirum. Weirum’s family sued various parties, including KHJ, asserting that the tragedy was a foreseeable consequence of the recklessness inherent to the nature of the “Super Summer Spectacular” promotion. The family’s lawsuit eventually reached the Supreme Court of California, which held for the plaintiffs. The Court’s opinion in the case, Weirum v. RKO General, Inc., 15 Cal.3d 40 (1975) has since become a well-known holding on the subject of foreseeability in torts law, and is often studied in American law schools.[1] (more…)

SONIC ASSAULT

The radio journey known as Sonic Assault started out as “The Klingon Invasion” on a little-known internet station in 2009 after some arm twisting from his gamer friends and colleagues.  Always wanting to explore his inner disc jockey and taking his in-game character name along for the ride, a young man set out to live his dream as a world famous broadcaster.
Ok, so the “world famous” part is a work-in-progress, but you get the idea.  Fast forward a few years later and here we are.
Sonic Assault is a little bit crazy, a little bit corny, and very much music and fun.  A nerd with many interests, your host Brian pours his heart and soul into each broadcast and strives to make each experience both memorable and repeatable.  Although the show’s roots come from gamer community radio stations like The Sanitarium.FM and Subspace Radio, Brian has extended his reach into more mainstream internet stations with the height of his career coming at WRRX-Rock 98.9 out of Jackson, MS.  After moving the show back to Subspace Radio in 2013, Brian began looking to conquer more of the radio world through syndication.  After making the decision to leave SSR as a member of their staff, the journey continues in the form of The Sonic Assault Radio Network.

THE JUKEBOX PARTY

I started in this business at the age of 12, working my first gig on New Year’s Eve for friends of my parents. I made the princely sum of $20, plus an additional $6 in tips. In fact, I still have that original $26 payout to remind me of when I started. By age 15, I had my own oldies show on a local South Coast radio station. Before I was old enough to drive, I found myself working as a deejay at a restaurant, a roller skating rink, and various private functions. I remember often reflecting on how truly lucky I was to be able to have a career doing something I loved – playing music and entertaining. I found it such a thrill to be a part of people laughing, smiling, dancing, and having a good time. Thirty years later, I still have the same respect, passion, and love for this wonderful business.

GARY JACKSON
