The Used Projecting ‘Rise Up Lights’ With New Video

The Used are back with new music, having just released their seventh studio album, The Canyon, and they’ve got a head-scratching new video to share for their song “Rise Up Lights.”

The clip is a bit odd, centering on a frequently naked man waking from a slumber, working out, dancing, shaving and bathing in his art-filled home. At different points in the proceedings, he appears to be possessed by singer Bert McCracken, whose face is projected upon the man. The song itself is a propulsive rocker with an undeniable beat from drummer Dan Whiteside and aggressive licks from guitarist Justin Shekoski. Meanwhile, McCracken’s angsty yet anthemic vocal keep the listener engaged throughout.

The Used have evolved their sound over the years, but “Rise Up Lights” feels more reminiscent of some of their earlier work. The track appears on The Canyon, a disc that’s mostly been inspired by the pain and loss of a loved one. The group worked on the disc with producer Ross Robinson.

“I’ve learned as an artist that a great idea is such a gift. If I don’t stop whatever it is I’m doing, even if while driving, if I don’t pull over at that moment, then maybe I didn’t deserve the idea to begin with. I learned to respect and worship the ideas in that way, that they are and will always be something sacred. Stopping in that moment was a brand new approach for us during this process,” commented frontman Bert McCracken about the creative process for The Canyon disc, which is available here.
